In Algebra we use letters (like x or y) or other symbols in place of unknown values.

For example: in x - 5 = 2, "x" is unknown.

We can find the value of "x" by adding 5 on both sides of the equal sign (=), like this:

Start with: x - 5 = 2

Add 5 to both sides: x - 5 + 5 = 2 + 5

Calculate: x + 0 = 7

Answer: x = 7
